What Did You Say?

Do you have an employee, family member, colleague or friend who has a hearing loss? You have plenty of company! In the USA, according to the American Speech and Hearing Association, 10% of the workforce has a hearing loss. By the age of 65, one-third of the population has a significant loss, while half do by age 75. Those numbers are expected to increase as more younger people are exposed to loud noises from portable amplifiers, earbuds (which bring the same amount of sound closer to the inner ear and thus it sounds louder and can hurt the inner ear more) and in factory environments.

Many people with hearing loss, especially those who experience it as adults for the first time, feel quite frustrated with all they know they are missing. They feel isolated and puzzled over what they misunderstand. If they are employed, they may well feel upset when they do not understand everything, and hence, do not get a desired assignment or promotion. Yet, this frustration does not have to occur to this extent. If a supervisor, friend or family member understands what to do, a lot of the frustration can be alleviated.
