Speech Self-Screening Questionnaire


Give yourself a point for every "no" reply to the statements below.

Pronunciation

  1. I pronounce 99% of my words clearly. Others usually understand me the first time.
  2. If I speak English as a second or third language, I can say those sounds in English that are different from the sounds in my native language, such as th, r, l, v, w and more.
  3. My rate is slow enough for others to understand me easily.
  4. I am confident that my pronunciation is professional.
  5. My speech can be easily understood on the telephone or in presentations by people from other parts of the USA
  6. I know how to guide a work team to develop new solutions to challenges.
Public/Persuasive Speaking
  1. I know how to begin, organize and end a presentation effectively.
  2. I know how to plan my persuasion strategy.
  3. I understand how to appeal to different age groups in the audience.
  4. My non-verbal skills (posture, use of hands, “reading” an audience’s reaction) are excellent.
  5. I do not use an excessive number of “uh’s” and other filler words.
Speech-Language-Hearing Impairments
  1. I pronounce s, r, l and all other sounds clearly in words like "world", and "sunshine".
  2. If I have a hearing loss, I know how to advocate for myself and to lip-read to some extent.
  3. I speak fluently and do not stutter.
  4. I talk at a comfortable rate so others can understand me easily.
  5. I can say common long words like "spaghetti", "catastrophe" and "extraordinary" easily.
Inter-personal and Profession-Specific Communication
  1. I know how to begin, organize and end a presentation effectively.
  2. I know how to plan my persuasion strategy.
  3. I understand how to appeal to different age groups in the audience.
  4. My non-verbal skills (posture, use of hands, “reading” an audience’s reaction) are excellent.

Score: Give yourself 1 point for each “no”.

       0 - Your speech seems excellent!
       1 – 2 - If the 1 or 2 issues are affecting your work or your self-confidence, this is a great time to enroll in a speech class or individual coaching.
       3 or more – Professional speech coaching or a speech class could make a real difference to your future.
