What is corporate speech pathology? Corporate speech pathology involves applying
our skills as communication experts to the needs of the business world. Thus, we
may choose to offer services ranging from working with employees who have communication impairments to offering public speaking/presentation skills, voice improvement, foreign or regional accent modification, sales communication, listening coaching, and much more.
How can I get a job as a corporate speech pathologist? We are self-employed, either full-time or part-time. We may do exclusively corporate work, combine a corporate practice with a general practice, or work part-time for an employer and part-time for ourselves.
How can I learn more about corporate speech pathology?
My first book, Talking on
the Job: The World of Corporate Speech Pathology, published in 2001 (third
edition) by Interactive
Therapeutics, Inc. , explains how to set up a corporate practice. There are
detailed descriptions of marketing techniques and my unique three-day program
for foreign accent modification. My third book, Sound Stories for Adults,
(Interactive Therapeutics, Inc.) provides phonemically-intensive reading matter for cognitively normal adults. It can be used for articulation, accent modification, lip-reading and voice instruction.
You are also encouraged to visit the Corporate
Speech Pathology Network for much more information about corporate
work, including a weekly chat!
Do you offer seminars on getting started in corporate speech pathology? Two day, unadvertised seminars are occasionally offered to small groups of interested, experienced speech-language pathologists who have CCC's. No CEU's are available. If you are interested in being notified of the next such seminar, please e-mail info@businessspeechimprovement.com with your name, address, telephone number and preferred e-mail address. You will be contacted when a seminar is being planned.
What other career fields besides corporate work, that don’t require a lot of
additional education, can SLPs go into?
My second book, Alternative Career Options for Speech-Language Pathologists, 2002 edition, profiles 20 SLPs who combined speech with other fields to create new careers. The book
describes each choice, how and why the person chose to make a switch, the
advantages and disadvantages of that new field, and how to get started in that field if you are interested. There is a career self-assessment questionnaire to help readers consider their own possible choices, as well, and information on other career possibilities.
