Making "small talk"

When you are trying to get to know a new friend, a great question to ask is about their "passion project", an activity they find especially enjoyable. Just ask "What was the most enjoyable thing you did today?" Maybe it's caring for falcons or training horses, baking the perfect cookie or loaf of bread, or training for a race. You can learn a lot from their answer.
